UNIFORM SIGNAGE

safely to your destination

The separate signage for cyclists

Understandable, consistent and across municipal and national borders

Signage for cyclists must be understandable and consistent across municipal and state borders. A uniform and clear design helps with orientation.

The recommended signage system on cycle paths in Bavaria is a combination of tourist and everyday signage and is both destination and route oriented. It is based on the “Merkblatt zur wegweisenden Beschilderung für den Radverkehr” of the Research Association for Road and Transport Engineering (FGSV).

Main signpost

Destination and route oriented

Main signposts are located at network nodes (crossroads, junctions) and decision points and indicate local and long-distance destinations with distance information. Additional pictograms in front of the place name provide information about destinations such as “train station” or “open-air swimming pool”, route-related pictograms such as “natural route” are located behind the place name.

Additional signs are attached below to mark thematic routes. Route sections that are part of the Bayernnetz für Radler can be recognized by the blue “Y” logo.

Intermediate signpost

Additional guidance on the route

Intermediate signposts are used on the route for longer stretches of road without intersections or at unclear situations at intersections. They show the direction of travel and do not require any additional information.

Network nodes

Where in which direction?

At junctions or intersections of different routes, the signposts show the direction to the individual destinations. The size and design of the signposts and the additional icons allow the information to be quickly understood while driving.
